Emil Bührle Collection at "Kunsthaus Zürich"

As an arms manufacturer, Emil Bührle profited from his business dealings with the Nazi regime before, during and after the Second World War. He maintained relationships with conservative and right-wing extremist circles and continually expanded his art collection. He had to return some works as looted art after the end of the war. Jewish collectors sold them under the pressure of persecution. Now, for the first time, an independent expert is examining the provinces of the remaining paintings. The exact results are to be presented in 2024.

The Kunsthaus Zürich now wants to show the paintings within their problematic context. However, the attempt has been heavily criticized by both the exhibition's scientific advisory board and the Swiss media. The Kunsthaus is struggling to fully address the historical context and its own role in this debate.
